Hydrotech Research Institute visited the National Institute for Rural Engineering (NIRE)

The team led by Director Cheng Ke-sheng of the Hydrotech Research Institute (HRI) and including Dr. Jin-Song Lai, Dr. Wen-Sheng Lin, Prof. Chih-Hao Fan (Chairman of the Department of Bioenvironmental Systems Engineering, BSE), Prof. Ming-Dao Su, Prof. Hwa-Lung Yu, and Associate Prof. Rita Yam visited the National Institute for Rural Engineering (NIRE) and participated the International Joint Seminar in Tsukuba, Japan, on 13 November, 2019. NIRE is one of the research and development units of the National Agricultural Research Organization in Japan with the mission to develop technology that contributes to “rural promotion” through prudent management of agricultural water and soil. NIRE's main research areas include: (1) improving on-farm production and farm management, (2) promoting resilient agriculture, (3) combating global environmental issues and managing regional resources; (4) developing technologies that contribute to sustainable agriculture by protecting crops, managing soil, and making use of local resources. The five main research groups of HRI are: (1) Soil and water disasters; (2) Water resource planning; (3) Water environment monitoring; (4) Aquatic ecology and wetlands; (5) Water laws and economics. As the research areas are highly similar between NIRE and HRI, this academic visit had great importance to the research and development of both institutes.

Before the Joint Seminar, NIRE arrange a short visit to the Museum of Agricultural Technology Development for the HRI team to provide a brief history of Japanese agricultural technology. The Joint Seminar was hosted by the Director of NIRE, Dr. Kunihiro Doi. The whole-day seminar started with the introduction of both research institutes. The research group leaders of NIRE introduced the research facilities and recent achievements. Prof. Ke-Sheng Cheng and Prof. Chih-Hao Fan talked about the background, research directions, laboratory facilities, research projects, and achievements of HRI and BSE respectively. This was followed by the individual presentations of all participating professors to introduce their research interests and significant findings. There was fruitful discussion between both HRI and NIRE on the topics of agricultural technology development, rural disaster reduction, and ecological restoration. The directions and topics for future research collaborations were also confirmed. The Joint Seminar provided an excellent opportunity for HRI and NIRE for deepening the mutual understanding of the development directions and research focuses, and this could enable the establishment of long-term relationships for research collaborations.
