Department of Horticulture and Landscape Architecture developed a novel “modified atmosphere package” technology to maintain the quality of guavas. The figure shows the appearance of “Jen Ju Bar” guavas after 4 weeks of storage followed by 3 days at 30°C using a conventional package and the modified atmosphere package. The fruit arrival availability ratio of the modified atmosphere package (92±2.8%) was higher than that of the conventional package (60.7±13.1%). After an additional 4 weeks of storage followed by 3 days, the fruit availability ratio of modified atmosphere package (66.4±13.7%) was still higher than that of conventional package (9.2±1.9%). The results were attributed to the fact that the modified atmosphere package could alleviate the disease of the "Jen Ju Bar” guava and soften the texture. Thus, the modified atmosphere package is better than the current conventional package. After storage and transportation back to the room temperature, guavas in the modified atmosphere package group had better hardness (166±10 N cm-2) and hue angle (110±1°) than the current conventional package group (140±10 N cm-2, 106±1°).
